I had these in categories at first, but that’s pointless, so it’s just a list in alphabetical order of as many comics as I felt like including along with some brief and inadequate attempts to explain why (most of these rely too much on visual effect to be easily summarized). So, this list comes with caveats about those forms. I’m also not so good about keeping track of short stories, single page comics, or anthology pieces that I really liked. I tried real hard to keep track of every book/comic I read this year, though, as usual, I neglected to take any notes about web/digital comics. It’s the end of the year, which means it’s “best of” time. ![]() For redirection to newer content, go to the homepage. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Phoebe begins to see the tender man beneath the soldier’s hard exterior … and the possibility of a life-and love-she never imagined possible. On May 8, 1945, a few months after the end of the novel, the Allies declared victory in Europe (VE-day). On August 25, 1944, the Allies liberated Paris. The Allies were already in southern Italy, as referred to in the novel, and had captured Rome. On June 6, 1944, called "D-day," Allied forces, including the United States, entered a massive invasion of western France. She looks great, and does a good job of playing a woman in distress who is torn in who she really loves. Hartnett, on the other hand, looks great, but the best you can say about his acting is that he looks great. The gorgeous Scarlett Johansson plays the lover of Eckhart, and the prospectivelover of Hartnett. The story about two LAPD partners investigating the Black Dahlia murder, while sharing a love for the same woman, stars Josh Hartnett and Aaron Eckhart as the pugilistic partners.(Both are prizefighters, when not on the beat.) There is some chemistry between the actors, and I enjoyed the work of Eckhart, who unfortunately hasn't enough scenes. Many of these books, however, have been written by Napoleon enthusiasts whose real interest lay in finding a new angle from which to approach Bonaparte. There have been nearly sixty biographies written about her in the two centuries since her death. ![]() But the more that I discovered about her, the more I was swept away by her dramatic and tumultuous life.Īs a biographical subject Josephine has benefited from our enduring fascination with her illustrious second husband, Napoleon Bonaparte. ![]() So it was the little-explored story of Josephine’s early years that attracted me to her as a subject. The fact that Josephine and Napoleon were both immigrants, for example, explained for me the intensity of that bond which so many commentators have described as improbable. It seemed to me that this background and these experiences had a profoundly formative impact on Josephine the woman, and that by neglecting them we risk misunderstanding her entirely. We were both born in the Caribbean, descendants of plantation dynasties we were both brought to the Old World in mid-adolescence and had to find our way in a society brutally different from that we had left behind. I was initially drawn to Josephine through a sense of personal identification. ![]() ![]() ![]() “Obviously there’s aspects of any serious illness you’d want to shield from them. “When it comes to my own illness, I’m trying to create an environment where my kids know I’m a happy person, that I love life, but occasionally have dips, mainly in the past but which can still happen now,” says Haig.
